Henri Joseph Etienne Gouraud (b. 1867-d. 1946), Brigadier General in the French Army, received his commission into the infantry in 1890 and spent his early military career in posts away from France, notably in Morocco. In May 1915 he was placed in command of the French expeditionary force, and it was during the Dardanelles campaign that he lost an arm and broke both legs.
