General Records of the Department of State. 1763 - 2002. Military Telegrams Relating to Korea

This series consists of telegrams from and to General Matthew B. Ridgway, Commander in Chief United Nations (UN) Command of the Far East Command discussing the situation in Korea. Ridgway corresponded with the Commander in Chief Far East (CINCFE). Subjects cover the ceasefire negotiations to end the Korean conflict, supervision of the cease-fire, administration of the cease-fire, development of Korean military forces, efforts to reunify Korea, Mutual Defense Treaty negotiations with South Korea, military aid, political reporting on the situation in South Korea, relations with the UN, and the disposition of Communist prisoners of war. The records were furnished by the Department of Defense Liaison Office and maintained by Harrison Freedom Matthews, the Deputy Under Secretary, in the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary.

General Matthew Bunker Ridgway (March 3, 1895 – July 26, 1993) was a senior officer in the United States Army, who served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1952–1953) and the 19th Chief of Staff of the United States Army (1953–1955). He fought with distinction during World War II, where he was the Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division, leading it in action in Sicily, Italy and Normandy, before taking command of the newly formed XVIII Airborne Corps in August 1944.
