At the request of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, White House aides created the Appalachian Regional Development Act and Public Works and Economic Development Act Files. This series documents the drafting and passage of both the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 and the Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965. The series also includes documentation on the circumstances that led to the drafting of both pieces of legislation and information on the President's Appalachian Regional Commission (PARC).
The series includes documents from a wide variety of sources including the Bureau of the Budget (BOB), the President's Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), the Bureau of the Census, the Undersecretary of Commerce, the Department of Labor, and Representative Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., Chairman of the Appalachian Regional Commission.
This series includes drafts of bills, clippings, correspondence, lists, memorandums, press releases, reports, speeches, and transcripts.
