Cutler, a lawyer and aide to President Eisenhower, graduated from Harvard Law School in 1922. He wrote two novels as a young man, neither of which were very successful commercially. While at Harvard, Cutler met western writer Owen Wister, who was co-founder of Harvard University's Tavern Club. Cutler wrote a comic opera in 1934 which was performed for the Club. Gordon Gray (1909-1982), government official, publisher, and educator. A graduate of the Yale Law School, Gray began his professional career as an attorney with a New York Law firm.
