Nelson (1859-1952), a noted botanist of the rocky mountain states, was a faculty member of the University of Wyoming from 1886-1942. Born in Iowa and attending schools in Missouri, he was hired as one of the first faculty members of the University of Wyoming. Wilhelm Gerhard Solheim (1898-1978), was regarded as the foremost authority on the fungi of the Rocky Mountain region and his personal herbarium served as a reference collection for mycologists and plant pathologists.
