Michael Maltese was born on February 6, 1908 in New York City to Italian immigrant parents, Paul and Concetta. He was married to Florence Sass in 1936 and had a daughter, Brenda, in 1938. He started his career in the cartoon business at the Max Fleischer Cartoon Studio in New York City in 1935 where he worked as a cel painter, assistant animator, and overtime camera man.
