Friends of the North Golf Course (FNGC), was founded in 1986 as an Albuquerque, NM based citizen action group dedicated to preserving 96 acres of University of New Mexico land as an open and undeveloped recreational area. They lobbied both the UNM administration and New Mexico Legislature for planned development in the area that would protect the flora and fauna and preserve the greenspace. The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. It was to be located in Albuquerque. Elias Stover was appointed the first president.
