Playwright and poet J. M. (John Millington) Synge (1871-1909) authored works reflective of his life in the Aran Islands, including In the Shadow of the Glen (1903) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907), the latter of which led to riots among Irish nationalists at the Abbey Theatre. Synge, together with W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, was instrumental in the founding of the Abbey Theater in Dublin.
