Ruth Murray Underhill Papers 1898-1984

Ruth Murray Underhill was a prominent anthropologist and advocate for American Indians. Born in New York State in 1884, she studied with Franz Boas, the father of American anthropology, at Columbia University in the 1930s. She spent much of her career working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, supervising the Education Division. In 1948, Underhill retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and became Professor of Anthropology at the University of Denver. She taught at the University until 1952, although she remained active at the University until shortly before her death in 1984.

Anthropologist Ruth Murray Underhill served as Supervisor of Indian Education with the U.S. Indian Service from 1942-1948 and was professor of Anthropology at the University of Denver from 1948-1952. She was born in Ossining, New York on August 22, 1884 and graduated from Vassar College in 1905 with a B.A. in comparative literature. She earned a Ph.
