John Mathews Collection 1786-1828 1786-1828

The John Mathews Collection is comprised of material related to the mercantile and land interests of John Mathews (1765-1828) on the Ohio frontier, especially in the areas of Fort Loramie, and Zanesville. Mathews' work as a surveyor is also represented, and of especial note is a journal kept in 1786-87, containing an account of his experiences while surveying in Ohio's Seven Ranges.

John Mathews (1765-1828) was born in Brain Tree, Massachussets, and served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War before working as a surveyor for the Ohio Company in the Northwest Territory and later settling in Muskingum County, Ohio.
