Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, IL. He studied in Ohio, Chicago, and New York and acquired a reputation as a poet and lecturer. Lindsay became famous for his walk from Springfield, IL to New Mexico in 1912, and for an unusual method of writing poetry. In 1924 he arrived in Spokane where he worked as a columnist for the "Spokesman-Review". He returned to Springfield in 1929, and at the time of his death was a major figure in American poetry. Wakefield was born in Greensburg, Ohio on August 27, 1846. He was the son of Edwin and Mary Payne (Churchill) Wakefield. His father was an early Disciples of Christ minister. Wakefield entered the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (as Hiram College was then known) in 1863 where he studied under Harvey W. Everest, J. H. Rhodes and Almeda Booth.
