McGowan Miller was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, on September 13, 1908. He first worked as a staff artist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and later moved to Palm Springs, California, where he sold caricatures of movie stars to several Hollywood magazines. He then moved to New Orleans where he freelanced for several publications. He then went to New York City and joined Associated Press in 1941. The National Cartoonists Society grew out of the so-called "chalk talks" that a number of cartoonists did for the troops during World War II. The Society was officially formed in March of 1946 with Rube Goldberg as its first president. Within two weeks, the society had 32 members.
