Francis Henry Bird was born in Swampscott, Massachusetts in 1887. He attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1910. He did graduate work at the University of California and received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1917. Bird served in the Army as a First Lieutenant in 1918 and then worked for the United Typothetae of America from 1919 - 1926, and continued to serve on their Committee on Research until 1932.
