Karl Arnstein Papers 1897-1981

Karl Arnstein (1887-1974) worked as a designer of zeppelin airships, first for the Luftschiffbau-Zeppelin Company in Germany and later for the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation in the United States. He also designed reinforced-concrete bridges, a dirigible hangar, and a high-speed train. Arnstein was among the first to apply the techniques of modern stress analysis to aircraft structures. From 1940 until his retirement in 1957, Arnstein was responsible for engineering at the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation in Akron, Ohio, which built civilian and military blimps as well as other aircraft. The Karl Arnstein Papers include personal and professional notes, correspondence, publications, photographs, plan drawings, sound recordings, and mementos. The papers also include published articles and manuscripts by Dr. Arnstein and his associates, scripts for speeches and presentations given by Dr. Arnstein, and publications and clippings related to Dr. Arnstein's career interests.

The Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation was formed in 1923 as a partnership between the Goodyear Corporation and the Zeppelin Company to build rigid-frame airships in the United States.
