Bernard Kutner was born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. He obtained a B.S.S. in social science from the City College of New York in 1944 and an M.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1948. Kutner then earned his Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard in 1951. Kutner had an extensive teaching career, from 1947 until 1972, and taught at several institutions, including Sarah Lawrence College, Brooklyn College, Cornell University, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
