Eckhard Hess papers 1952-1984

The Eckhard Hess collection primarily consists of large amounts of research data used in Hess' research on both imprinting and pupilometrics. There is also a large amount of correspondence between Hess and publishers regarding reprint authorizations as well as draft changes on Hess' publications. Finally, there are of several versions of drafts on Hess' published manuscripts.

Eckhard Hess was born in Bochum, Germany on September 27, 1916. He immigrated to the United States in 1927 where he became a naturalized citizen in 1943. He began his undergraduate studies at Blue Ridge College in Maryland in 1941. The next year Hess began wartime service in the United States Army for two years. Most of the records in the collection pertain to the $400,000 raised by the American Baptist Education Society in 1889-1890 in order to obtain a 600,000 grant from John D. Rockefeller for the creation of an endowment for the University of Chicago.
