Miss Josephine Schwarz and her sister, Hermene, founded the Dayton Ballet. The photographs were taken by Jane Reece, internationally known Dayton photographer, an associate of Stieglitz and Steichen, and one of the first professional female photographers in the United States. Jane Reece was photographer, born ca. 1861, who developed her talent with little formal training. She began her career in Dayton, Ohio, in 1904. During her 40 years of work she worked out many inovative photographic techniques, received numerous awards and tributes, participated in hundreds of exhibitions and influenced and was influenced by many of the pioneer artistic photographers of her day, such as the Photo-Secessionists.
