United Nations 780 Commission Archive 1992-2000

This collection is a compilation of materials of the United Nations' Commission of Experts for the Investigation of Atrocities in the Former Yugoslavia. Informally known as the "780 Commission" since its establishment in 1992 by UN Security Council Resolution 780, the Commission's mandate was to investigate and report findings to the Secretary-General of the UN on evidence of international human rights violations in the territory of the former Yugoslavia.

The Commission began its work in November 1992, and concluded work in April 1994, producing two interim and a final report that includes several annexes of investigations. On the basis of their investigations, the Commission concluded that indeed breaches of the Geneva Conventions and other grave human rights violations had been committed. Bassiouni, M. Cherif, 1937-....

M. Cherif Bassiouni, a native of Egypt, immigrated to the United States in 1962. In 1964, he began his teaching career at DePaul University College of Law. From 1975-1977, Bassiouni and University of Chicago Professor Morton Kaplan drafted a plan for Middle East peace. The plan's essential tenets are reflected in the Camp David Peace Accords.
