Brewster E. Littlefield was born on November 19, 1896, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Brewster of Braintree, Massachusetts. He had two siblings, Edith and Frank (d. 1918). In September 1917, Littlefield sailed to England with the 101st Engineer Regiment. He arrived in France in October 1917 and became a gas mask specialist with the rank of master engineer.
