Augustus F. Smith was born in or near Rochester, New York, on October 3, 1819, the son of Archelaus G. Smith and Melania Boughton. After graduating from Union College, he moved to New York City, where he practiced law with Isaac Martin for around 30 years. In the mid-1860s, his office was at 31 Nassau Street, and he resided in Fort Washington, Manhattan. On May 22, 1844, Smith married Lucy Ann Elliot (September 26, 1819-November 3, 1870).
