Walter DeWitt Henderson was born in Plano, Texas, on November 14, 1893, the son of Alpheus F. and Mary Henderson. He was appointed to the United States Geological Survey in August 1917. During World War I, he served in France as a topographical draftsman for the United States Army's 419th Depot Detachment of Engineers and 447th Depot Detachment of Engineers.
