Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason. It was created in 1848 from sections of Wood and Jackson Counties. Wirt County was one of the fifty western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863. Richard Frederick Walker was born on August 15, 1833, in Virginia. After an apprenticeship as a printer, Walker moved to Richmond, and in 1851 began a career in printing. Walker served in the Home Guards during the Civil War, during which he attained the rank of major, and served on the Richmond City Council in 1863-1864.
