Howard W. Wiltse was born in New York in the mid-1830s, the son of Cornelius and Eunice Wiltse. He taught school in a town named Burns in the early 1850s, and later moved to Leonard, Michigan (now Big Rapids). Wiltse graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1861 and practiced law in Big Rapids until his death on September 19, 1862. His family lived in Hannibal, New York. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937.
