Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood (b. 12 December 1724, Butleigh, England–d. 27 January 1816. London, England) was an officer in the British Royal Navy. The son of Samuel Hood, a vicar, he entered the Royal Navy in 1741 and served on Ludlow. He became a lieutenant in 1746 and was commander of Jamaica in 1754. Thomas Smith was born in England around 1707, the illegitimate son of Sir Thomas Lyttelton, 4th Baronet, and an unknown woman. Raised as a member of the Lyttleton family, he joined the Royal Navy and became a junior lieutenant on the Royal Oak in 1727.
