Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. Albert Feuerwerker (1927-) was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. He studied at Harvard University, earning his A.B. degree (history) in 1950 and his Ph.D. in Modern Chinese History and Far Eastern Languages in 1957. He was a lecturer at the University of Toronto (1955-1958) and a research fellow at Harvard (1958-1960), then came to the University of Michigan where he spent the remainder of his career.
