Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. John B. Lansing was born in Geneva, NY on July 11, 1919. He received his doctorate in economics from Harvard in 1949, then came to the University of Michigan where he taught in the department of economics until his death in 1970. He became full professor in 1962 and chairman in 1970. In addition, Lansing served as program director of the University's Institute for Social Research.
