Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. Additional inventory work was undertaken in 1997-1998 for risk management purposed, but generated little new information. Thomas M. Donahue was a space and planetary scientist and a professor of physics. He taught at Johns Hopkins and the University of Pittsburgh prior to coming to the University of Michigan in 1974. He specialized in the atmosphere of Venus and the evolution of planets. He chaired Michigan's Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and founded the Program for the Integrated Study of Global Change. From the description of Thomas M.
