The Library of the Surgeon General of the United States Army, begun in 1836, was the nucleus of the National Library of Medicine's collections. In 1922 it was renamed the Army Medical Library, then the Armed Forces Medical Library in 1952. It remained under the Surgeon General's authority until 1956 when it was transferred to the Public Health Service and renamed the National Library of Medicine.
