Merritte W. Ireland was born in Columbia City, Indiana. He received an M.D. degree from both Detroit College of Medicine (1890) and Jefferson Medical College (1891). Shortly thereafter, Ireland joined the Medical Department of the Army. He served in various posts throughout the U.S., had duty in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and was for 10 years head of the Hospital Corps Division of the Surgeon General's office. Born in Charleston, Massachusetts, David L. Huntington, 1834-1899, studied medicine at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the army as an Assistant Surgeon in 1862. Huntington was Acting Medical Director Army of the Tennessee during Sherman's march to the sea in 1864. A career medical officer, Lt. Colonel Huntington at times served as acting Surgeon General.
