Joycelyn Elders was born Minnie Lee Jones in Schaal, Arkansas on August 13, 1933. In college, she changed her name to Minnie Joycelyn Lee (later using just Joycelyn). Elders became Surgeon General of the Public Health Service on September 8, 1993, appointed by President Clinton. She was the first African American to serve in the position. Born in Charleston, Massachusetts, David L. Huntington, 1834-1899, studied medicine at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the army as an Assistant Surgeon in 1862. Huntington was Acting Medical Director Army of the Tennessee during Sherman's march to the sea in 1864. A career medical officer, Lt. Colonel Huntington at times served as acting Surgeon General.
