Merritte W. Ireland was born in Columbia City, Indiana. He received an M.D. degree from both Detroit College of Medicine (1890) and Jefferson Medical College (1891). Harvey Williams Cushing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 8, 1869. He graduated from Yale College in 1891 and in 1895 received his M.D. and A.M. degrees from the Harvard Medical School. He served on the staff of the Johns Hopkins University Hospital from 1901 to 1912, where he devoted himself to neurological surgery. Harold Wellington Jones (1877-1958) was born in Cambridge, Mass. He attended M.I.T. and received his M.D. degree from Harvard in 1901. He graduated from Army Medical School in 1906.
