John Adriani Papers, 1925-1988

Dr. John Adriani (1907-1988) was a nationally known anesthesiologist who played a key role in anesthesiology's evolution into a full-blown medical specialty. Most of the collection reflects Adriani's career in anesthesiology after it began to flower in the late 1940s.

Anesthetist, educator and drug consultant. After receiving his M.D. from College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1934, he spent five years at Bellevue Hospital. In 1941 he joined Charity Hospital in New Orleans where he spent the rest of his career. Also served on the faculty of Tulane University and LSU, and served as a consultant to the FDA and the AMA. The Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, was founded as L'Hôpital des Pauvres de la Charité in 1736, the bequest of shipbuilder Jean Louis. Subsequent buildings were erected in 1743, 1785, 1815, 1832, and 1939.
