Sculptor and landscape painter Katharine Beecher Stetson was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman and artist Charles W. Stetson. She studied in Rome, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and with sculptor Frank Tolles Chamberlin, whom she later married.
