The Woman's Relief Corps, an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, was founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1938. Its goals were to further the "love of country and its institutions and a love of liberty" through acts of charity. The WRC drew its membership from wives and daughters of Union veterans of the Civil War. Its charity extended to Union veterans and their dependents, war widows, and orphans.
