In 1930 the General Education Board awarded Radcliffe $500,000 for the construction and equipping of laboratories for the physical sciences. The new science building, designed by Coolidge and Carlson of Boston, was begun in 1931 and completed by the time College opened in September, 1932. The building was named after William Elwood Byerly, a former Professor of Mathematics at Harvard and an early supporter of the College.
