Elliott Carr Cutler (1888-1947), AB, 1909, Harvard College; MD, 1913, Harvard Medical School, was appointed Moseley Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Surgeon-in-Chief of Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1932. Cutler was one of the first surgeons to work on the human heart; he inserted an instrument into the left ventricle, dividing the stenosed mitral valve in 1923, a procedure that later became common practice as a treatment for rheumatic heart disease. Harvey Williams Cushing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 8, 1869. He graduated from Yale College in 1891 and in 1895 received his M.D. and A.M. degrees from the Harvard Medical School. He served on the staff of the Johns Hopkins University Hospital from 1901 to 1912, where he devoted himself to neurological surgery.
