Philip Hofer (1898-1984) was a librarian, book collector, and founder and first curator of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts at Houghton Library at Harvard University. Hofer graduated from Harvard College and spent a few years in business. He began collecting a wide variety of printed books in 1917. Nathan Haskell Dole was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard University. He worked as a teacher and journalist in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and California, and as advisor and editor for the publishing firms Crowell and Appleton.
