James Hardy Ropes ( 1866-1933 ) was born in Salem, Massachusetts . He graduated from Harvard College in 1889 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1893 . In 1901, he was ordained a minister in the Congregational Church . He served as an instructor, and then assistant professor, at Harvard Divinity School from 1895 to 1903 ; he was then named Bussey Professor in 1903, a position he held until his appointment as the Hollis Professor of Divinity in 1910 .
