The Friends of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library at the University of Montana was founded in 1960. From its beginning, it played a vital role in bolstering the university’s tight library budget by purchasing books and other materials that the library could not otherwise afford. Leo A. Rhein Jr. was born in Helena, Montana, on July 29, 1919. He spent all but three of his early years in Wolf Creek, Montana, and attended high school in Big Fork and Helena, Montana. He graduated from Helena in 1938. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin from 1945 to 1947 and at the University of Montana from 1947 to 1950, graduating with a B.S. in Forestry.
