John Lawrence Sullivan was born on October 15, 1858 in Roxbury, Massachusetts to Irish immigrant parents. Nicknamed the “Boston Strong Boy”, Sullivan began to box professionally in 1878. Portrait and landscape painter; New York, N.Y. DuMond was born in Rochester, N.Y., in 1865. He studied at the Art Students League from 1884 to 1888 under William Sartain and Carroll Beckwith, and at the Academie Julian in Paris from 1889 to 1891 under Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant and Boulanger.
