Alvord was born in Rutland, Vermont, where he developed an interest in nature. He attended the United States Military Academy and displayed a talent in mathematics. He graduated in 1833. He was assigned to the 4th U.S. Infantry and participated in the Seminole Wars. Simeon Reed was born in 1830 in Massachusetts. After several jobs in commerce, he married Amanda Wood, and in 1852 they sailed to San Francisco. That same year they moved to Portland, where he worked in William Ladd's general merchandise store, becoming a partner four years later. John Webster Perit Huntington was born July 5, 1831 in Norwich, Connecticut and died June 3, 1869 at the age of 37. He sailed around Cape Horn in 1850, settling in Yoncalla, Umpqua (now Douglas) County, Oregon in 1852. He was elected to the state legislature in 1860 and appointed Oregon's Superintendent of Indian Affairs in 1863. William Barnhart, pioneer merchant of Portland, Oregon, was the first Portland agent of Wells, Fargo and Company in the early 1850s.
