Charles W. Clarke came to Spokane Falls from Kentucky with his brother, Robert, in 1884. He purchased land eight miles from Spokane Falls, cleared it, and constructed a residence. Clarke farmed and operated a mortgage business in Spokane Falls. He moved to Post Falls, Idaho in 1890 and occupied himself with the commercial development of that area. Charles W. Clarke was born in Forestville, Connecticut, in 1848. He graduated from the Rochester Academy and the Eastman Commercial College of Rochester, New York, and had his business training in New York City. For twelve years he was with the Cincinnati furniture manufacturing firm of Clarke Brothers. In 1884 he came west and purchased a 3100 acre stock ranch between Spokane and Rockford.
