Whitworth College was founded officially on February 19, 1890. During the years 1987 and 1988 plans were made to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Of course, this celebration, all during the 1989 year, was an opportune time for a fund drive. (Timothy R. Orrin E. Tiffany joined the faculty of Whitworth College in 1926 as professor of history. He succeeded Professor H. L. Hussong as dean of the College in 1927. The Board named Tiffany acting president on July 22, 1927. His wife became the registrar. At the time Dr. Tiffany took over administrative leadership he disclaimed any ambitions for the presidency.
