Winton Weydemeyer was born in Cass City, Michigan, on March 19, 1903, the son of Harry and Margaret Weydemeyer. From the age of 6 weeks, he lived on the family farm about 6 miles north of Fortine, Montana. He graduated from eighth grade at the local one-room school at the age of 11, having skipped two grades.
