The Department of Military Science was established at the University of Oregon in 1919. The school had sponsored military training through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program before the creation of a Military Science department. Although the Washington Territorial Legislature mandated the creation of a military department at the University of Washington in 1862, it was not until 1882 that the department was established. In 1916 the responsibilities for military training were transferred to the federal government's newly created Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC).
