Melvin Clarke George (1849-1933) was born in Ohio and came to Oregon with his parents in 1851. He was educated at Santiam Academy and Willamette University. He was an Oregon state senator, 1876-1880, and U.S. Representative, 1880-1884 (Republican), and later practiced law in Portland.
