Dr. Frederick Gilman Scovel (born 1902) and his wife Myra Scovel (August 11, 1905- August 26, 1994) were missionaries overseas for the United Presbyterian Church for almost thirty years. The works in this collection are a collection of correspondence, diaries, manuscripts and other miscellaneous items that represent the Scovels’ missionary work and their time spent overseas.

Myra Scovel (1905-1994) was an American nurse and missionary for the United Presbyterian Church for more than thirty years. She and her husband, Dr. Frederick Gilman Scovel, were assigned to missions in China (1930-1951) and India (1953-1961). She was also a writer and poet. The Transylvania Presbytery was organized by appointment of the synods of New York and Philadelphia. The Synod of New York made part of the Presbytery of Abingdon into the Transylvania Presbytery, which encompassed the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River. Dr. Frederick Gilman Scovel (1902-) and Myra Scott Scovel (1905-1994) served the United Presbyterian Church as medical missionaries in China from 1930 to 1951 and in India from 1953 to 1959. In China, the Scovels worked at Bachman Hunter Hospital in Tsining, Shandong, China and remained there for fifteen years until they were repatriated in 1943 after a period in a Japanese internment camp.
