Martha White Sick was born Martha McRedmond White and was the daughter of Justice William Henry White and Emma McRedmond White. Her maternal grandparents were Captain Luke and Mrs. Katherine McRedmond. They had four children: Emma, Anna, William, and David. Captain Luke M. McRedmond settled the area of Redmond, Washington, in 1871. The city of Redmond was named in his honor. His daughter, Emma McRedmond, became the postmistress of Redmond in 1885.
