On September 5, 1858, U.S. Army soldiers under Colonel George Wright (1803-1865) defeated Native Americans at the Battle of Spokane Plains. The engagement followed a skirmish four days before with members of the Spokane, Palouse, Yakama, and Coeur d'Alene tribes at Four Lakes. A native of Michigan, Louis Livingston first came to Spokane in 1924 to teach history at McKinley Junior High School. He joined the faculty at Lewis and Clark High School in 1925 and was appointed vice-principal by Henry Hart in 1928. Livingston earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Washington in 1932. In 1946 he served as superintendent of schools for American dependants in Seoul, Korea.
