Chief Seattle (b. around  1786, near Blake Island, WA – d. June 7, 1866, Port Madison, Washington) was a Suquamish Tribe and Dkhw'Duw'Absh chief. A prominent figure among his people, he pursued a path of accommodation to white settlers, forming a personal relationship with "Doc" Maynard. Created in 1955 to advise city government regarding the artistic and cultural development of the city; reorg. 1957 and its advisory responsibility was extended to recommendations regarding the design of new physical structures to be constructed in the city; 1961 responsibilities were broadened to include historic preservation recommendations; abolished 1971 and replaced by the Seattle Arts Commission.
